CYCLING FOR SUSTAINABLE SCHOOLS
Schools need to explore causes and impacts of climate change, ethical consumerism, the growing energy, water and food crisis and the difficult cultural transition that will need to occur in the shift towards a sustainable society. Green Pedals aspires to work with Schools in a three-fold way by triggering inspiration for cycling, providing sustainable and climate resilient solutions for basic needs and using these as a visual reminder to stimulate a dialogue within the community. The solutions should be as far as possible integrated, locally relevant and participative.
VISION & GOALS
INSPIRE CHANGE through developing schools as centres of sustainability: Stimulate a dialogue amongst children, teachers, parents and community about sustainability, circular economy, consumerism, liveability in cities, climate resilience, good health via cycling events, lectures by local experts, movies, blogs, social media, games and interactive activities.
INSPIRE CHANGE through promoting the joys of cycling leading to an increase in quality of life, better health and sustainable mobility.
FACILITATE SUSTAINABLE CHOICES and develop climate resilience: Support and fund locally sustainable and climate resilient solutions in schools such as solar-panels, energy efficient lighting, green roofs, rainwater harvesting, water filtering, purification and reuse, solar boilers. Use these in a playful, artistic and fun manner to serve as a visual reminder of sustainability.
EMPOWER COMMUNITIES to be wardens and promoters of sustainable choices that are locally maintainable. The solutions developed and implemented as part of the Green Pedals movement would be locally relevant and emerge as an integrated and participative process with focus on local needs, capacities and climate.
